Fatima, born in Little Rock,
Arkansas, moved to L.A. at the age of four with her mother
and two sisters. After completing high school early at 16
and becoming certified as a cosmetologist, Fatima worked as
a professional hairdresser for a brief period of time, but
her love for dance led her to clubs and dance contests. With
some contest victories, and a mind full of steps, Fatima quickly
became one of the top dancers/choreographers in the music
video industry.
Her “big break” came when director John Singleton
asked her to choreograph the video for Michael Jackson’s
Remember the Time. Since then, Fatima choreographed
videos for most of today’s top artists, and is the choreographer
behind many of the Gap’s popular dance commercials.
She choreographed and appeared in the Khaki Soul
spot, starred in one of the Spring Is Here ads, and
choreographed campaigns for GAP (Give A Little Gift
& My First Love) and GAP Kids (Super Powered
Denim). Fatima also appears in commercials and print
ads for Coca Cola’s Nu Classic. Soul. campaign.
Acclaimed by critics and peers, Fatima has received six nominations
for the MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography: Mary
J Blige’s Family Affair (2002), Aaliyah’s
Try Again (2000), Will Smith’s Wild Wild West
(1999), Busta Rhymes’ Put Your Hands Where
My Eyes Can See (1998), Dr. Dre’s Been There,
Done That (1997), and Brandy’s Baby (1995).
She is the back-to-back winner of the Music Video Producer’s
Association Award (MVPA) for Best Choreography. In 1998 she
received the honor for her work on Busta Rhymes’ Put
Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See, and in 1997 for her
hip-hop tango in Dr. Dre’s Been There, Done That.
Fatima also received three nominations in 2000 for her work
on Will Smith’s Wild Wild West, the Backstreet
Boys’ Larger Than Life, and Santana’s
Maria, Maria, in 2001 for her work on Aaliyah’s
Try Again and most recently for Macy Gray’s
Sexual Revolution. She was an American Choreography
Awards nominee for Aaliyah’s Rock the Boat and
More Than A Woman.
Fatima worked on Shakira’s MTV Video Music Awards performance,
the films Head of State with Chris Rock and Biker
Boyz with Larenz Tate and Mya and the Keith haring musical
Radiant Baby, which is produced and directed by George
Wolfe, who did Savion Glover’s Bring in the Noise,
Bring in the Funk.
Named one of Entertainment Weekly’s “100 Most
Creative People in Entertainment,” Fatima made the transition
into music video direction. She has directed videos including
Heads High (Mr. Vegas), Dance and Shout (Shaggy),
I Can Do Too (Cole; Girlfight film soundtrack), Cheatin’
On Me (Kandi), Ooh La La (Valeria), and More
Than What I Wanted (CeCe Winans).
